| Abstract: | The outplacement service has increased its market size rapidly since 1997 due to the economic recession followed by companies’ reduction of the number of employees. In 1997, total sales were 3 billion yen and with 2,235 customers. In 2003, the total sales grew to 30.3 billion yen with 33,036 customers, and the market size increased more than ten times in these six years. However, the outplacement service has tended to dwindle ever since it reached its peak in 2003. In 2004, the total sales decreased to 19.3 billion yen with 19,563 customers. The reasons for the reduction in market size can be the increase in job offering with the economic recovery and the decrease in number of layoffs by companies. However, not only the changes of the outside conditions hold the cause, the client satisfaction of the career counseling can also be thought to have problems that led to the reduction of market size. To find out more about its reasons, here are three hypotheses.
1. The purpose of outplacement service by career counseling is for the client to build up techniques to help him find work.
2. Even if the client is able to find work using the outplacement service, he is not necessarily be satisfied with it.
3. The client is fully satisfied when the counseling matches his personal circumstances.
These three hypotheses have been provided to be correct by the actual data. Outplacement service is the basis of career counseling. Enriching and strengthening career counseling are the key points for expansion of the outplacement service. This idea is compatible with that of James E. Challenger who firs thought out this outplacement service. From now on, in order to expand outplacement service further in Japan, enrichment of career counseling, client satisfaction with the career counseling and the increase in ability of counselors are the key points. |
